Bomanite Imprint Systems with custom patterns and Bomanite Bomacron creates a one-of-a-kind experience at St. Louis Zoo – Primate Canopy Trails installed by Bomanite licensee Musselman and Hall Contractors.

Primate Canopy Trails is a 35,000-square-foot outdoor expansion to the Primate House at the St. Louis Zoo in St. Louis, MO. The $13 million exhibit consists of new outdoor homes for primates and includes climbing structures that allow guests to explore the forest canopy next to the animals.  This new exhibit is like a jungle gym for all primates, both zoo animals and human visitors.  Creating a first-of-its-kind zoo experience, it is an outdoor playground that brings a sense of joy and freedom to all who venture there.

Decorative Concrete Conveys Story

Overhead mesh tunnels connected to the Primate House lead to tall, preexisting live trees and other outdoor habitats with spaces for the animals to climb and perch.  Four tunnels lead to the Primate House, and four lead to the Primate Care Center.  There is even a see-through tunnel that guests can walk through to get a panoramic view of the animals.  Inside the care center, windows provide the primates with a view to the outside, which they didn’t have at the original Primate House.  Two custom-built boxes in each habitat provide shelter from the rain or just a place to spend some alone time. In the winter, the caretakers can add a heating pad to transform the boxes into a warm zone. Each habitat also has custom shade sails and a cool mist fan for warm or hot days.  While down below the paving placed by Musselman & Hall allows guests to wander beneath the trees surrounded by jungle.  Bomanite Imprint Systems custom decorative concrete has the ability to tell a story as well as to enchant the eyes and stimulate the senses.

Sam Kroesen of Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors worked with the designers from PGAV Destinations to develop a hardscape that would not only impress guests but would also mimic the natural habitat of the animals. Musselman & Hall craftsmen placed integrally colored concrete with “Dried Mud” textures and then imprinted the surface with actual jungle leaves and anatomically correct footprints for several monkey species to accurately represent the gait pattern of each species.

All of the Musselman & Hall work was capped with the jewel of the project, a 17-foot diameter medallion that used stenciling and three colors of Bomanite Color Hardener before being imprinted with an “Embedded Stone” texture to create a large-scale graphic that would hold up to the heavy foot traffic.  Bomanite Imprint Systems are cast-in-place concrete flooring and paving that adds a distinctive architectural touch to any project, together with the durability to stand up to the toughest traffic loads and environmental conditions.

You Dream It, We Will Make It Happen

Bomanite Bomacron is a textured version of the original Bomanite Imprint decorative concrete, and is also cast-in-place, colored and imprinted, but provides the added dimension of texture and relief between the joint lines. The multitude of available patterns simulates a wide variety of natural materials including slate, granite, limestone, sandstone, wood, and cobblestone.  Of course, as in the case in this project, if none of the existing patterns fit your specifications, custom patterns are in reach of your imagination.  You dream it, and our network of Bomanite licensee’s will make it happen.

Bomanite Systems Equate to Installation Success

The RYE SoBo apartment complex incorporates 2,800 SF of decorative flatwork and 8,400 SF of uncolored sidewalks that were installed by Bomanite Licensee Colorado Hardscapes.  Included in these installations were Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems and Bomanite Toppings Systems.  Working with Price Design Group as the general contractor and BrightView as the landscape architect, Colorado Hardscapes integrated a specialty scoring pattern into the Bomanite Sandscape Texture sidewalks around the building and achieved the different colors using Bomanite Con-Color in Cobblestone and French Gray.  Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative concrete was an optimal application for this installation to provide added durability while inserting a decorative element that blends well with the artistic nature of Broadway Park.

Bomanite Micro Top-XT is one of Bomanite’s Toppings System applications and has extraordinary adhesion properties and the ability to withstand prolonged pedestrian and vehicular traffic, while also providing a tough, water-retardant coating that made it perfect for this installation.  On the northeast side of the RYE SoBo Apartments, Colorado Hardscapes placed 300 SF of custom colored Bomanite Micro-Top XT in a pattern created by prominent Colorado artist, Clark Richert.  Known primarily for his large, geometrically patterned paintings, Richert derived his work through investigation of five-fold symmetry and quasi-crystal patterns found both in nature and theoretical mathematics.  With 15 different colors in the design, placing each color was laborious and tedious, but perfectly executed by the Colorado Hardscapes team.  Each color is surrounded by a saw cut to accentuate the crisp lines and enhance the dimensionality of the art piece.

You can see this beautiful work of art in person off Alameda in the alleyway between Bannock Street and Cherokee Street in Denver’s South Broadway neighborhood.  Richert originally wanted to use embedded mosaic tiles in concrete to create his piece, but once he saw how vivid and solid Bomanite MicroTop-XT could make each section, it was absolute that Colorado Hardscapes would employ this application instead.  Projects like this are where Bomanite products really shine, allowing the RYE SoBo apartment complex to showcase Richert’s iconic art while enhancing the iconic energy and inspired vibes of the area.

Danbury, CT, has embraced the vision of TOD, Transit-Oriented Development, to help revitalize downtown Danbury.  At the key of their TOD vision is a plan for higher density compact urban development that features walkable, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes and sidewalks, within a 10-minute walk of the train station and, connecting various modes of transit, jobs, housing, services, and amenities.  The streetscapes and sidewalks play a major role in attracting investment, new businesses, and employees to Downtown Danbury.  Whether an area is walkable depends on the physical condition of the space accessible to pedestrians as well as the perception of the physical space and its attractiveness to those who do and could utilize it.  The previous existing streetscape improvements were constructed in 1993 and in need of replacement, as evidenced by this Google Street View picture below from 2018.  The city selected Colonna Concrete & Asphalt Paving, LLC as the main contractor, and Connecticut Bomanite Systems was chosen to install the decorative concrete sidewalks for the roughly $12 million project.

Decorative Concrete Creates an Architectural Artistic Aesthetic

Connecticut Bomanite, working with the City of Danbury, CT, installed the Bomanite Imprint Systems and chose the Medium Ashlar Slate pattern and the Soldier Course Belgian Block pattern.  They were the perfect choices in order to meet the project objective of making the downtown more pedestrian-friendly and appealing to shoppers, diners, and developers.  Instead of the higher cost of installing natural paving materials such as slate or granite, Bomanite Imprint Systems has been used in a wide variety of residential, commercial, and municipal applications to upgrade plain concrete or asphalt.  Bomanite Imprint Systems, the original cast-in-place, colored and imprinted architectural concrete paving, offers unmatched durability to withstand the toughest traffic loads and harshest environmental conditions.

This product is cast-in-place, colored and imprinted, plus it provides added dimension of texture and relief between the joint lines (shallow joint configurations).

Bomanite Sandscape Texture paving was installed at the Stowers Institute by Musselman & Hall Contractors, who commissioned a custom stencil to incorporate the Stowers Institute logo into the hardscape design.

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research was founded by Jim and Virginia Stowers, who sought to create a highly collaborative, intellectually stimulating environment where scientists could freely share their ideas and create a synergy that would spur great discoveries.

Jim trained as a physician and Virginia had a career as a registered nurse, giving the couple a profound understanding of the medical field and the role that medical research plays in the treatment and prevention of diseases.  They both had personal experiences with cancer as well, which solidified their decision to dedicate their personal fortune toward creating one of the world’s most influential centers for foundational research.  Jim Stowers said “Virginia and I are both cancer survivors and we know firsthand the fear and loneliness that come with the diagnosis of a life-threatening disease.  So, it was natural to think about how we might offer help and hope to others facing cancer and other diseases.”

Durability and Beauty by Design

Bomanite Sandscape Texture paving was installed at the Stowers Institute by Musselman & Hall Contractors, who commissioned a custom stencil to incorporate the Stowers Institute logo into the hardscape design.

The Stowers Institute research campus officially opened in November 2000 after five years of construction.  Almost 21 years later, the facility grounds needed a few upgrades, one of which was replacing the entry walkways.  Musselman and Hall Contractors worked with local landscape architecture firm Confluence to develop the site improvement plan.  Utilizing samples and mock-up design, Musselman and Hall presented the Stowers Institute with a plan to renovate the entry using Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems.  Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems provide innovative systems, longer-lasting products, and a variety of mix designs that combine needed durability with desired beauty.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture was the product of choice to create the decorative concrete paving surface at the Stowers Institute.   Sandscape Texture by Bomanite is designed for outdoor applications where an alternate to conventional concrete finishes is desired.  The finished product resembles sand blasted concrete and is used in combination with a variety of color and staining options, creating consistent texture and durability.

The Stowers Institute needed to restore the paving under the covered front walkway and the design provided by Musselman and Hall included demolition of the old surface and replacement of the entry sidewalks with a two-toned, integrally colored Sandscape Texture paving pattern.  This 7,400 square foot installation was broken into two phases to accommodate operations at the Stowers Institute.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture paving was installed at the Stowers Institute by Musselman & Hall Contractors, who commissioned a custom stencil to incorporate the Stowers Institute logo into the hardscape design.

Additionally, Musselman and Hall commissioned a very detailed sandblast stencil through Floormaps to represent the logo of the Stowers Institute.  The sandblasted logo was an extremely important detail and had to reflect the Stowers logo accurately.  Musselman and Hall provided a mock-up design, and the client was blown away by the detail and accuracy.  This successful execution resulted in a long-lasting tribute to the couple that started it all – Jim and Virginia Stowers.

Lasting Legacies

With more than a century of construction heritage dating back to the late 1800’s, Musselman & Hall Contractors is known as one of the mid-west’s longest-standing general contractors.  They have been building the surrounding communities over the last century, while simultaneously building and establishing long-lasting relationships for the past 100 years.

The Stowers founded the Stowers Institute with a vision of providing cutting edge research to help stamp out diseases and their 2-billion-dollar investment in the Institute has allowed it to continue its mission to aid humanity.  Even as the second of the founders passed away recently, their legacy stands firm and their desire and mission to give people hope for a better life is being carried forward.

Colorado Hardscapes also captured the Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project GOLD AWARD for their unbelievable achievement at RYE SoBo Apartments, Denver, CO, of creating the Clark Richert Abstract Art in decorative concrete titled: Four Color Intertwine – 2021.  Using Bomanite Toppings Systems with Bomanite Micro-Top XT, the art piece was brought to life with fifteen different colors, and each color is surrounded by a saw cut to add to the crisp lines and enhance the dimensional look.  Richert originally wanted to use embedded mosaic tiles in concrete to create his piece, but once he saw how vivid and solid Micro-Top XT could make each section, it was absolute that Colorado Hardscapes utilize that product instead.

Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction installed revitalized decorative concrete sidewalks at HL Turner Group in Concord, NH, using Bomanite Toppings Systems with Bomanite Micro-Top ST.

As a company, you only get one chance to make a good first impression.  This axiom presented a slight problem for HL Turner Group, in Concord, NH, whenever potential clients physically came to the office.  The existing sidewalks and entryway had heavily spalled areas and many prominent cracks.  Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction was invited twice by HL Turner Group to conduct Lunch and Learns.  After those presentations they were also asked to examine and to recommend a decorative concrete Bomanite System to revitalize the sidewalks and entrance.

Meeting All Specifications

Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction installed revitalized decorative concrete sidewalks at HL Turner Group in Concord, NH, using Bomanite Toppings Systems with Bomanite Micro-Top ST.

HL Turner Group is a professional team of architects, engineers, and building scientists serving business, industry, and government.  They are very concerned about the art and science of the built environment.  They needed a sidewalk renovation that matched the current aesthetics of their building and landscaping, would provide long term durability, was low-maintenance, and was economical.  Premier Concrete Construction chose Bomanite Toppings Systems using Bomanite Micro-Top® ST because it met all the specifications.

Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction installed revitalized decorative concrete sidewalks at HL Turner Group in Concord, NH, using Bomanite Toppings Systems with Bomanite Micro-Top ST.

The highly trained concrete craftsmen of Premier Concrete Construction began the task of preparing the old concrete.  This work included repairing and cleaning the heavily spalled areas and numerous long cracks while being sensitive to the heating system within.  With all the repair and prep work completed, and a surface that was now workable and ready for renovation, the crew then applied the Bomanite Micro-Top® ST system to the sidewalks and entry.

The durability and versatility of Bomanite Micro-Top® ST allows it to be spotted as accent areas, continued up a wall, extended up the side of a building or applied directly to an asphalt street section.

Through many discussions with Mortenson, Colorado Hardscapes became their go-to contractor to help with other parts of the project.  Along with the installation of the exterior hardscape, Colorado Hardscapes was contracted to install decorative saw cuts at two parking garage levels and asked to help remedy two board formed walls that when poured (by others) did not pass Mortenson’s standards.

Colorado Hardscapes used the Bomanite Micro-Top ST system to correct a previous poured board formed wall installation and bring them up to code that now accent the exterior finishes on the building and provide a smooth and sleek appearance.Bomanite Topping Systems Micro-Top ST was selected to be the new finish on the walls. Bomanite Micro-Top ST is a two-part, polymer-modified cementitious coating that has excellent adhesion and weather resistance when applied to correctly prepared and primed surfaces.  Colorado Hardscapes’ crews spent many hours grinding and patching the existing walls to get them smooth enough to apply the Bomanite Micro-Top ST.  The two feature walls now accent the exterior finishes on the building and provide a smooth and sleek appearance.

The Bomanite stamped concrete, Bomanite Sandscape Texture, and Bomanite Micro-Top ST turned out beautiful and earned Colorado Hardscapes the 2020 Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project Silver Award.  Using readily available multiple Bomanite products to provide great solutions for the General Contractor, Architect and client is what makes Colorado Hardscapes an astounding partner for any design project.

The expansion and redesign of Bellevue’s Downtown Park was a long-time vision for civic leaders that has finally come to completion. Bomanite Licensee, Belarde Company installed a variety of stairs, sidewalks, and plazas throughout the 21-acre site as well as a key Bomanite architectural concrete feature in the newly designed Inspiration Playground.

The Bellevue Rotary Club was instrumental in helping to expand the original playground in the Downtown Park to include an innovative play space where kids of all ages and abilities can play and explore at their own pace. With the Design of Carol Henry from Design Concepts, the park is dedicated to fun, imagination and learning, and presents a universally accessible play experience that creates an overall truly Inspiration(al) Playground. The new playground offers interactive features that engage the senses, create inclusiveness and accommodate children of all abilities and their caregivers.

Belarde Company’s expertise lends to a creative small wooden bridge made of stamped concrete. The bridge planks and sides highlight the Bomacron “12” Boardwalk” pattern from the Bomanite Imprint Systems collection.  The installation of a horizontal concrete imprinted surface by itself is fairly straightforward.  However, constructing all the surfaces to replicate wooden planks required special attention to detail. Constructing the bridge required a monolithic horizontal and vertical concrete pour, strip color, imprint and finish process.   Even the ends of the ‘planks’ utilized the Bomanite system.  In addition, the bridge was embedded in the banks of an artificial stream water “Splash Pad” play area. Belarde Company constructed the stream bed using a hand-seeded multi-colored glass and aggregates system on its surface.

The project presented several challenges beyond the multiple surfaces of the bridge that included a very aggressive schedule. The owner, the City of Bellevue, was adamant that the project had to be completed before their annual Fourth of July Celebration which had been held at the Downtown Bellevue Park for over 30 years. Adding to the schedule constraints and to the inherent difficulties of installing various architectural concrete systems, Bellevue recorded its wettest winter ever! The Belarde Company team built a temporary tent structure over the bridge’s work area to adapt to the rain ensuring that a high-quality project would be delivered on time. By working closely with the City of Bellevue and Design Concepts, Belarde Company’s experience, attention to detail, and ability to coordinate, ensured the satisfaction of all parties and more importantly, a unique playground that the children visiting this unique interactive play area in Bellevue can enjoy for years to come.

The object was to source a product that would be low-maintenance and have longevity. After meeting with the Board Members, reviewing sample products and systems a plan of action was decided. A Bomanite Imprinted Concrete Pattern with an Exposed Aggregate Finish was chosen for style and functionality. Musselman & Hall Contractors replaced the vehicular portion with 6” concrete pavement integrally colored with Bomanite Light Copper. The 3,750 square foot area was imprinted with the Bomacron English Sidewalk Slate stamp and given a light exposed Bomanite Sandscape Texture finish to complete the sophisticated parking pavement design. The stamped pattern with exposed aggregate Sandscape finish was chosen due to the nature that a pre-worn finish would not show the wear from traffic nor need constant resealing to look fresh.
