The City and County of Denver needed to make improvements to the existing 38th & Holly Detention Pond. During small and larger storm events, water was collecting in Holly Street at depths up to approximately 1.5 feet. The water would then overflow the pond embankment along Holly Street to enter the pond and caused severe erosion to the embankment, meanwhile creating on-going maintenance concerns and repairs.

The City and County of Denver moved forward with plans to significantly re-landscape the detention pond along with planting trees for pedestrian shade to mitigate the issues, prevent future erosion and provide storm water management.

Bomanite Grasscrete Partially Concealed System is a pervious monolithic cast-in-place concrete suitable for this gabion tiered drop structure detention pond located in Denver, CO that was planted with varying grasses for greenspace and stormwater management. In order to tackle the innovative decorative concrete design by the Landscape Architects, Stream Design, a gabion drop structure was constructed utilizing architectural concrete finishes to create this storm water improvement at 38th & Holly Detention Pond in Denver, CO that included the partially concealed Bomanite Grasscrete system that uses the Molded Pulp Formers. Stream Design met with the contractor early on to discuss some of the ideas to create more beautiful and functional drop structures to help not only enhance the storm water design and erosion control, but also to bring extra value to the neighborhood. Collectively they came up with concrete finishes that tie together nicely in a tiered design and encourage the flow of storm water. A combination of Grasscrete, stamped concrete, exposed aggregate and stained concrete, was the answer to the design decision.

Bomanite Grasscrete Partially Concealed System is a pervious monolithic cast-in-place concrete suitable for this gabion tiered drop structure detention pond located in Denver, CO that was planted with varying grasses for greenspace and stormwater management.By utilizing Bomanite Grasscrete, the project incorporated a pervious concrete element to the paving. Grasscrete is a continuously reinforced monolithic cast-in-place concrete solution that allows water to flow through and plants to grow within the voids. The Grasscrete was filled with a variety of different plants to blend with the adjacent planted areas syncing together the beauty of concrete and landscaping. By creating voids within a monolithic, continuously reinforced, cast-in-place concrete slab, plants have the opportunity to thrive within concrete. These voids also allow water to penetrate the slab, providing a sustainable yet durable solution for pervious pavement and storm water management. The partially grassed Grasscrete System is robust enough to withstand the Colorado winters and additional water flow while creating that feel good factor of greenspace.

By incorporating different concrete finishes but utilizing uncolored concrete as the base of all of the paving, cost effective yet decorative concrete was provided for the City and County of Denver Public Works project.

Because of its structural integrity and continuous reinforcing, Grasscrete is not subject to the differential settlement that can occur with precast blocks and thin plastic products. The combination of concrete, steel and aggregate interlock ensures that Grasscrete can bear isolated loads; such as downriggers placed in an emergency situation with no support blocks. The robustness of the system minimizes the potential for failure during critical use.

The residential backyard space, adjacent to an Artists/Musicians studio located in Massachusetts, required an access area to accommodate large delivery vehicles. More importantly, it required a permanent solution for stormwater management and yet still maintain landscape aesthetics necessary to help nurture the creative minds of the occupants.

Bomanite Licensee, Premier Concrete Construction worked with the homeowner in planning out the space for the Bomanite Pervious Concrete Grasscrete System. Grasscrete not only augmented the landscape architecture by handling the stormwater runoff but added benefit of a very long lifespan. Grasscrete has been a Bomanite System for over 40 years with installations throughout North America in all climate types. Grasscrete can handle the harsh New England winters and has zero potential for freeze-thaw or clogging issues. The Bomanite Grasscrete Molded Pulp Former System has been engineered to provide long-term durability, low maintenance and structural strength.

The backyard project incorporated 3,000 square feet of the Grasscrete System. A subbase was prepped to facilitate stormwater management via proper drainage and to create the outer forms of the project. Next, the Molded Pulp Formers were placed with rebar for continual reinforcement. The concrete then poured, leveled, broom finished, and allowed to dry. Voids were created to put the final finishing touches on the entire project. At the time of installation, the owner was contemplating having half of the Grasscrete fully Concealed and the half closer to the building Partially Concealed.

Grasscrete can be used as an exposed utilitarian product for functional applications or as a concealed system with vegetation such as grass or native ground cover installed over the concrete. This system allows you to mitigate drainage issues while maintaining strong structural integrity that allows for some of the heaviest vehicles to operate unencumbered. A perfect solution for this Artist Studio space.

Premier Concrete Construction, LLC won the 2018 Bomanite Gold Award for Best Grasscrete Project.
