Exposition Park is a collection of world-class museums, educational and sport facilities and entertainment venues. It is more than just an urban park with outdoor recreational activities. Within the 160-acre campus, you can experience the fun of science, math and technology at the California Science Center, learn about the diverse cultural experience at the California African American Museum or explore natural and cultural worlds at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, or simply relax in the splendor of the City of Los Angeles Rose Garden.

The landmark Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum offers the excitement of world-class competition, and the Los Angeles Football Club Banc of California Stadium is the newest addition to the community that is all ready to host the 2028 Olympics.  Bomel Construction Company, Bomanite Licensee, was brought in by PCL Construction Services to install the fine details of the hardscape project list of the well-known prominent designer in the community, Studio-MLA. The building interior and exterior of the Banc of California had to stand up to its reputable counterparts.  Studio-MLA developed the exterior site design concept to blend into and complement the existing venues landscaping as well as provide a highly visual and intuitive fan experience. Working closely with the team owners, design team, and the surrounding communities, Bomel Construction Company helped Studio-MLA transform the 16-acre site into an iconic facility for world class sporting and entertainment events.

A series of entry plazas, pedestrian walkways, seat walls and stairs, over 150,000 square feet of hardscape, were planned to cultivate the fan arrival experience and contribute to the visual identity of the Stadium for the surrounding community. Studio-MLA’s design drew inspiration from the LAFC brand. The Northwest corner of the site stands out with a small platform – called the “flight wall” – wrapped in a unique texture that bridges old and new inspirations. Bomel Construction Company constructed the cast-in-place concrete wall with a “Fishscale” custom form-liner done with a gray Integral Color to achieve the statement art-inspired piece. This location being most proximate to the Coliseum is key as an entrance to the building as well as a focal point for park visitors.

A publicly accessible rooftop terrace and garden over The Fields LA contains a large flexible event space that extends the Stadium Club Level lobby interior space to the outdoors. Fans can take advantage of the panoramic views over Expo Park. The terrace has been designed with a geometrical arrangement of pedestal pavers that are accentuated by a series of large trees set amid lineal planters adrift in crushed stone. Bomel Construction Company installed the gray Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture finish to the lineal planters as well as the circular tree planters. The flexibility of both game day and non-game activities provide year-round engagement for the whole community.

The pedestrian entrances and walkways, throughout and around the LAFC Stadium predominately used the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture System, allowing for low maintenance and a light buff color for solar reflectance benefit. Bands of the Bomanite Alloy Exposed Aggregate System were incorporated smartly in gray with Clear Glass Aggregate and Mirror Flakes that sparkle and catch visitor’s attention serving as line formations directing fans to the stadium entrances. Bomanite Sandscape Texture and Bomanite Alloy are both suited exceptionally well for exterior applications— anywhere that improved wear resistance for light- to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic combined with an architectural finish is necessary. Bomanite Decorative Concrete perfect for those 22,000 fans emerging in and out of a world class stadium.

The Hilton Anatole Hotel is a landmark that spans 45 lush acres in the Dallas Design District just north of downtown. The hotel was constructed in 1979. The hotel has over 1600 guest rooms, ballrooms, five dining venues, a spa and health club, outdoor pool and 7-acre private Sculpture Garden. The hotel is host to many events, conferences, and conventions. In 2015, Hilton broke ground on Jade Waters, a $20 million seasonal resort pool complex, utilizing 4 of the 7 acres of garden space. Jade Waters features a lazy river, two 180’ water slides, a children’s area and activity pool, leisure pool, swim-up bar and full-service restaurant. Cabanas and day beds are available in addition to the ample lounge seating. Jade Waters is exclusively for the use of hotel guests and health club members.

General Contractors, T&G Constructors, contacted Bomanite Licensee, Texas Bomanite in the Design Development phase of the project to work with Landscape Architecture firm TBG’s design team to provide finish options and budgeting to T&G Constructors. The hardscape portion of the project contains 60,000 square feet. Texas Bomanite provided Sample Boards of concrete finishes to TBG prior to full-size mockups being constructed on-site. Two finishes from the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems and three different colors were selected by TBG and Hilton from the jobsite mockups. The finishes were Bomanite Sandscape and Bomanite Sandscape Refined systems. The Bomanite Refined finish was also combined with a Bomanite Custom Imprint System to create a unique finish for the area of the project bounded by the Lazy River and referred to as the “Big Island”. This finish was also installed at the “Beach Entry” of the activity pool. The Imprint System combined with the Bomanite Sandscape finish simulates shifting sands on a beach.

Following approval of the mockups, the construction phase began. Due to unusually wet weather and soil conditions, the project had fallen behind schedule. T&G Constructors required an accelerated schedule to maintain the July opening date for the waterpark. This required crews to work six and seven day workweeks as well as holidays for several weeks. The congested site and wet soils presented another obstacle and required daily meetings with T&G Constructors Superintendents and their subcontractors for coordination of work areas as well as laydown areas. Texas Bomanite used recycled concrete fines in place of cushion sand to provide a better base on which to set forms and pour the concrete. Recycled concrete was also used to provide haul routes to get materials and equipment in and out of the site. The waterpark and garden opened in July of 2016 as scheduled.

The sustainable properties of Bomanite Sandscape Texture make it an excellent choice for environmentally conscious applications. Bomanite Sandscape Texture mix designs readily accept fly ash or slag or other supplementary cementitious materials, offsetting a portion of the ordinary portland cement. Urban heat island effect can be greatly reduced by thoughtfully designed installations. Third party independent testing has shown that Bomanite Sandscape Texture can exceed .29 solar reflectance without the use of white cement, allowing for the concrete to be cooler underfoot making it ideal for large urban plazas and pool deck applications.

Victory Park is a 75 acre mixed use development that surrounds American Airlines Arena. It is home of the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars and is located in downtown Dallas. In 2014 a redevelopment with a focus on pedestrian-friendly improvements to Victory Park Lane was commenced. The goal was to improve the overall pedestrian experience and connectivity between American Airlines Center / Victory Plaza and the Southern area of Victory Park.

The street and streetscape improvements were a vital component of transforming Victory Park into Dallas’ premier walkable entertainment district. Texas Bomanite worked with Stantec ViBE in choosing the best medium for the proposed redevelopment streetscape areas. Bomanite Sandscape Texture was part of the hardscape design which included granite pavers, concrete pavers, and amenities such as benches, lighting, tree grates and signage. The Architect’s design of the Sandscape areas included sandblasting of a geometric pattern.

Texas Bomanite installed 4,500 Square Feet of Bomanite Sandscape Paving in the hardscape areas along Victory Park Lane between the tree grates and curbs. The project was built in 3 phases to meet the General Contractors critical schedule and to accommodate the W Hotel, High Rise Residences, Restaurants, and other businesses along Victory Park Lane.

The work performed by Texas Bomanite earned them top recognition and a Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project of the year.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture is designed for outdoor applications where an alternate to conventional concrete finishes is required. Sandscape Texture, one of the Exposed Aggregate Systems offered by Bomanite for architectural concrete surfaces, utilizes specialized concrete mix designs, additives, topical treatments and advanced application procedures.

The finished Sandscape Texture product resembles sand blasted concrete and can incorporate specialized colored sands in the concrete and aggregates exceeding 3/8” in diameter. The final product is an economical alternate to other decorative finishes while producing a monolithic concrete slab with a low life cycle cost due to the pre-aged nature of the surface. Applications include plazas, shopping centers, schools and exterior walkways—anywhere improved wear resistance for light- to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic is necessary. These highly durable surfaces are available in a multitude of standard and custom options, including light-reflective formulations that reduce heat island effect.

The design team at Bowman Bowman Novick approached Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors in 2012 to discuss the 2,500 square foot plaza that serves as the entrance to a new, $15 million, state-of-the-art penguin exhibit at the Kansas City Zoo that opened in November 2013. Bowman Bowman Novick, along with associate architects, The Portico Group of Seattle, WA created an exhibit that is a multifaceted, rich experience that features four penguin species as well as other exotic aquarium species with an emphasis on the world’s southern oceans and shoreline habitats. Both indoor and outdoor exhibits  incorporate land and water viewing of Tropical and Antarctica penguin species such as Humboldt or Blackfoots, and King, Gentoo and Rockhopper.

Musselman & Hall worked with the design team to incorporate the overall theme and vision for the decorative concrete plaza entrance by choosing the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System, Bomanite Sandscape Texture and Bomanite Con-Color in various Blues and Green. The Bomanite Sandscape finished plaza was engraved and stained to replicate the earth from a South Pole perspective. Antarctica, Australia, South America, Africa, and the Galapagos Islands were created along with the oceans by using Bomanite Con-Color. The stain was layered from light to dark tones to create relief and variation in the oceans and land masses. The oceans were stained a light blue near the continents; transitioning to deep, dark blue at the deepest areas of the ocean for a real world effect. Along with replicating the continent, eighteen species of penguins along with their unique footprints (to scale) were engraved into the plaza that required a critical layout and accurate execution. The work performed by Musselman & Hall earned them top recognition and a Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project of the year.  The Helzberg Penguin Plaza entrance is the just the beginning to inspire people’s interest in becoming stewards of the planet’s wild penguin populations. Due to an issue with extensive epoxy bubbling and delamination, Central Unified School District located in Fresno, california was interested in removing and replacing a large portion of the existing pool deck around the competition, activity and receiving pools and replacing it with a solid surface with a non-slip finish.

Heritage Bomanite bid and won the job and proposed a Bomanite Sandscape finish due to its durability and
non-slip qualities. The district accepted Heritage Bomanite’s suggestion after examining the on-site samples that were poured. Work progressed for just under three months during which a wide array of work was completed, including the installation of over 13,000 SF of Bomanite Sandscape concrete with an exposed sand finish. The complete scope of work included the demolition and removal of the existing epoxy coated concrete, the installation of 550 LF of 2’ cantilevered nose around the competition pool, replacing the slot drains with 1045 LF of PolyCast drain with removable tops, the installation of 2600 LF of self leveling joint sealant and 84 LF of non-sag underwater joint sealant, the installation of all depth marker and water polo tiles, and the installation of over 90 anchors for various diving platforms, hand rails, and water polo goals and stanchions.
