Preparing for the winters is a must in Black Hawk Colorado. In wanting to make a safe transition area from the outdoor environment to the indoors is what Monarch Casino Resort & Spa was thinking when it came time for their renovation. After 5 years of construction, the Monarch Casino, opened to the public in November 2020. With the build out managed by PCL Construction, the casino doubled its size to provide expanded amenities to their customers including new luxury hotel space, new restaurants and a world class spa and pool facility. To help welcome their guests, the casino also built a new parking garage with an attached high-end Porte Cochere.

First impressions are everything

Monarch-Casino-Colorado-Hardscapes-Bomanite-English-Sidewalk-Slate-Texture-Sandscape-Borders-13What better way to welcome people to the luxury casino than to provide a luxury drop off area. Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes was contacted in mid-2018 by PCL Construction to install over 14,000 sq. ft. of decorative concrete in the new Porte Cochere area. Designed by MBA Architecture (One Studio D+A) Bomanite stamped and stained concrete systems were a part of the specification from day one. Working closely with the project’s designer, including providing multiple rounds of concrete sampling and a visit to Colorado Hardscapes’ design center, the architect honed in on two different coordinating colors for the Bomanite Imprinted Concrete System and two colors chosen for an added textural finish of Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System Sandscape Texture. The mix of colors and textures provided specific visual paths to keep cars in specific lanes and to designate curbs and pedestrian friendly areas.

Monarch-Casino-Colorado-Hardscapes-Bomanite-English-Sidewalk-Slate-Texture-Sandscape-Borders-14The selected colors and texture of the Bomacron English Sidewalk Slate were picked to enhance the stone veneer and copper covered columns in the area. V cut joints were used throughout all the concrete for the control and decorative joints. A radiant heat system in the concrete keeps the entire area warm and free of snow during the winter months. The Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System adds an additional slip resistant benefit.

Every project has its challenges

Monarch-Casino-Colorado-Hardscapes-Bomanite-English-Sidewalk-Slate-Texture-Sandscape-Borders-6In this case, the challenge was the snowmelt system. Coordination with the other sub-contractors, specifically the snowmelt subcontractor was a full-time job for the Colorado Hardscapes team. Claiming workspace for decent size daily pours while maintaining slopes and jointing layout took a lot of preplanning and quality control. Pouring 4 different concrete types through the radiant heat system was a forming challenge. In the end with their expertise and craftsmanship Colorado Hardscapes was able to provide a consistent looking concrete installation across the entire area.

Hardscape Satisfaction

After a year of fulfilling the punch list requirements, Colorado Hardscapes was very proud of the final outcome of the Bomanite Decorative Concrete products they installed for the Monarch Casino. The Bomanite Company awarded Colorado Hardscapes the 2020 Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project Silver Award for creating a comfortable environment for customers with timeless architecture that provides highly detailed precise decorative concrete work for the Monarch Casino Resort & Spa.

The Sprint Center, Kansas City’s home for sports, concerts, family shows, collegiate competitions, tournaments and special events has been open since 2007 and recently known as the T-mobile Center after the merge in 2020 with Sprint Corporation.  Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC installed 64,000 square feet of concrete hardscapes during the construction of the arena. A small portion of their work involved The Moon’s Plaza, which you can still see today.

Sprint-Center-Moon-Plaza-M-and-H-Bomanite-Sandscape-and-La-Paz-Stone-2The project designer, Chris Doyle, created The Moons as the Percent-for-Art component of the Sprint Arena. In front of the huge glass arena, Mr. Doyle created a plaza with three elliptical gardens, each with a water component. Hanging above each of the gardens is a moon, a circular LED video screen that shows individuals flying across the screen simulating orbiting the arena. Musselman & Hall was brought in by Landscape Architects, BBN Architects to bring the surface to life resembling rock and sand textures. With several samples and discussions on creating the ultimate design, it was decided to go with a combination of the Bomanite Imprint Systems and  Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems.

Sprint-Center-Moon-Plaza-M-and-H-Bomanite-Sandscape-and-La-Paz-Stone-10Providing the ability to accomplish the right amount of detailed hardscape a custom imprint pattern, La Paz Random Stone, created of random rocks was designed to achieve a natural stone look once stamped. The pattern was then colored with Bomanite Black Color Hardener, a coloring agent that delivers increased durability, wear resistance and fade resistance. Along with the imprinted surface Bomanite Sandscape Texture integrally colored in white created elevated bridges and was  woven throughout the surface to provide contrast, movement and flow to the surroundings.

Sprint-Center-Moon-Plaza-M-and-H-Bomanite-Sandscape-and-La-Paz-Stone-6The Bomanite Exposed Aggregate line of products and systems have a built-in long-life span as well as the long standing Bomanite Imprint Systems, both known for their robust durability. Using a combination of Bomanite Decorative Concrete Systems earned Musselman & Hall Contractors an Award and provided the T-mobile Center a galaxy of design flexibility.

The Aquarium at the Boardwalk is one of the latest adventures in Branson, Missouri that focuses on fun for all.  Branson’s developing entertainment complex begins with some features that visitors can expect to enjoy at the Aquarium; more than 250 different animal species, an original 5D submarine adventure to the bottom of the sea, a 24-foot high Kelp Forest climbing structure for kids, stingrays, a beautiful 16-foot view of a coral reef, two mirrored art installations that give the sense of infinite ocean life, lionfish, and more than 7,200 individual sea animals! Visitors will also meet the Aquarium’s characters Aquarius, the wise and helpful Giant Pacific Octopus, and Finn, the adventurous Golden Puffer. Not only will these animals be the first they see on the Boardwalk, Aquarius is represented in numerous ways throughout the experience.

Using the Bomanite Imprint Systems Musselman and Hall Contractors worked with PGAV Destinations in creating a custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern with Custom Radius Wood Grain Planks that snake around the entrance to the Branson Boardwalk Aquarium. This first phase and 21-month build was designed by PGAV Destinations, a leading master planner and designer with major attractions including theme parks, aquariums, museums, zoos, heritage sites, lodging, and branded destinations. Before stepping inside the aquarium, guests are mesmerized by the exterior of the building— Aquarius, a striking 55-foot tall reflective stainless-steel sculpture of a giant Pacific octopus. The 46,000 square-foot home for saltwater species of all kinds, collectively supports an impressive 400,000 gallons of aquatic life. This grand entrance needed a remarkable outdoor paving plan that would accentuate the sculpture and lead visitors to the main park attraction. PGAV Destinations having worked with Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC previously on the St. Louis Aquarium project, called upon them again for their decorative concrete expertise.

Using the Bomanite Imprint Systems Musselman and Hall Contractors worked with PGAV Destinations in creating a custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern with Custom Radius Wood Grain Planks that snake around the entrance to the Branson Boardwalk Aquarium.Sam Kroesen, Musselman & Hall Project Manager worked with PGAV Destinations to help develop the best system and products to showcase the architectural specifications for the walkway and entrance to the Aquarium. Reviewing samples and coloring methods to create a realistic looking boardwalk while showcasing the entrance was the goal. The Bomanite Imprint Systems stamped concrete with custom patterns to fit the winding pathway was the material of choice.

Creating a custom unique large hexagon stamp provided dimension and an artisanal element for the field around Aquarius. Leading up to and twisting around the large mirrored octopus was a custom 8’ radiused plank board pattern, creating that beach boardwalk feel. Bomanite Imprint Systems are available in over 400 differing patterns that can resemble real wood, stone or natural textures. Custom stamped concrete patterns are endless and provide the flexibility, strength and durability that other paving materials lack.

Using the Bomanite Imprint Systems Musselman and Hall Contractors worked with PGAV Destinations in creating a custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern with Custom Radius Wood Grain Planks that snake around the entrance to the Branson Boardwalk Aquarium.A total of 18,000 square feet of imprinted concrete custom patterns were installed using Bomanite Autumn Brown Integral Color for the boardwalk path and a 1:1 mix of Bomanite Moccasin Integral Color and Bomanite Sand Integral Color for the Hexagon paving. Initially the clients had chosen a Color Hardener sample, with the need to cut costs and stay within budget, Kroesen was instrumental in solving the dilemma by mixing onsite Integral Colors to match the color selected. A final touch of Mirrored glass was hand broadcast into the boardwalk path to provide sparkle and complement Aquarius.

This thematic installation of Bomanite Decorative Concrete offers versatility in design, long-term durability, low-maintenance, weather-resistant features and environmentally friendly attributes earning Musselman & Hall Contractors the GOLD Award for the Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project.

Concrete Arts, Inc was called upon to help create this stunning backyard transformation. The Homeowners previously had a stamped concrete pool deck that weathered the smart winters of Wisconsin and provided summer kid play and family fun gatherings for 12 years. With the kids growing older, the homeowners decided it was time to create and renovate the space to provide a more adult oriented entertaining retreat.

Concrete Arts, Inc. had the opportunity to create a stunning transformation for the homeowners backyard renovation with the Bomanite Revealed Exposed Aggregate System supplying a slip-resistant, durable pool deck that caters to daytime relaxation and upscale evening gatheringsConcrete Arts, Inc. tore out the existing stamped concrete as well as the fencing which was limiting the size and design of the project and was no longer needed per a change in the city ordinance. The homeowner wanted to have several seating areas for entertaining and relaxing so creating shade and expanding the deck was a must. Once the old concrete was removed the footings were installed for the pergola and trellis design. Seventeen 18” x 54” frost footings were drilled and poured. Concrete Arts then started the process of building the imposing structure out of rough-sawn cedar. Simpson decorative fasteners were used to add aesthetics to the structure, and it was stained with Australian Timber Oil.

Once the pergola was built, Concrete Arts was able to begin setting forms for the concrete decking. The existing slide was eliminated and replaced with five water fountains which shoot into the pool for a playful touch. A concrete basin was erected at the side of the deck for the basalt stone fountain water feature providing an artful background with textural variation.

Concrete Arts, Inc. had the opportunity to create a stunning transformation for the homeowners backyard renovation with the Bomanite Revealed Exposed Aggregate System supplying a slip-resistant, durable pool deck that caters to daytime relaxation and upscale evening gatheringsThe homeowners had such success with their stamped concrete pool deck they knew they wanted to continue with the same medium. Upon approval of the decorative concrete samples, Concrete Arts working with award winning designer Mark Hauri from MH3 Design Group for layout and design, installed the Bomanite Revealed Exposed Aggregate System in antique white and slate gray colors with a sprinkling of Mirror Glass for that added sparkle.  A light etching was given to the concrete surface and then a penetrating silicone sealer to provide an extra layer of protection and water repellent.

These highly durable surfaces are available in a multitude of standard and custom options, including light-reflective formulations that reduce heat island effect, hard to achieve colors for concrete, water resistant formulations for wet areas and other specialty applications, providing a Bomanite Decorative Concrete System that is tailored to your project and a suitable system for this beautiful renovated backyard pool deck.

Concrete Arts, Inc. had the opportunity to create a stunning transformation for the homeowners backyard renovation with the Bomanite Revealed Exposed Aggregate System supplying a slip-resistant, durable pool deck that caters to daytime relaxation and upscale evening gatheringsTo finish the distinct decorative detail, concrete tables were created in the matching deck color scheme for two seating areas. LED lights were added and poured in the tables for a dramatic nighttime luminosity. A perfect pergola, modern color scheme and romantic planting palette transformed this backyard into the homeowners retreat that will provide many years of sophisticated fun and relaxing moments. The Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems create the elegance needed to match the design in color and type of aggregates available, decorative finishes and designed sawcuts revealing just how brilliant concrete can be.

With a convenient location on the edge of the Front Range, Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center offers a welcome reprieve from the usual. The hotel showcases the state’s alpine charm through every nature-inspired detail of the property. The Gaylord Resort is Colorado’s largest hotel built to date and was the largest hotel project under construction in the US during 2018. It was also the largest project Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes installed in 2018 with over 150,000 Square feet of architectural concrete imprint and flatwork placed.

Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center creates rustic coloradan inspired environment with Bomanite Systems

The 1,501-room resort is joined by a 485,000 Square foot convention center and an extensive indoor/outdoor water park on a sprawling 85-acre site. Recreational facilities include a 800-foot lazy river, expansive event lawns, a resort style outdoor pool, 22,000-square-foot indoor pool venue with slides, tennis courts, pool bar, putting course and a basketball court. The outdoor space is planted with native vegetation and includes walking paths.

Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center builds rustic coloradan rustic environment with Bomanite Imprint Systems of Stamped Slate and Stamped Brick patterns for interior Grand Lodge Restaurants and WalkwaysColorado Hardscapes’ scope for the architects flooring and hardscape plans included the incredible Grand Lodge atrium, decks for two pools and the lazy river, all hotel and convention center entrances, and the west event center lawn and convention center sidewalks. A variety of Bomanite products and techniques were integrated to create multi-dimensional surfaces for this highly-animated rustic environment. Defining the right combination of materials, finishes, imprints, colors, hardeners and many other variables was no small effort. Three rounds of product samples and pricing were considered in pre-construction before finally arriving at the specified package.

Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center builds rustic coloradan rustic environment with Bomanite Imprint Systems of Stamped Slate and Stamped Brick patterns for interior Grand Lodge Restaurants and WalkwaysIn the Grand Lodge, the Bomacron Small Random Slate imprint pattern created a textured, rock walkway. Careful placement, impression-by-impression, assured a deliberately, on-repetitive, natural-looking result. Conversely, incorporating the Bomacron Running Bond Belgian Block imprint required rigorous placement precision to achieve an intentionally consistent look. Both imprints required extensive layout preplanning, consideration of mix-design constraints related to accessing work areas, and coordination with other trades.

Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center builds nature inspired water park complex, interior flooring, entrances and walkways with Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System, Bomanite Sandscape Texture in Aurora, COAcross the sprawling site, the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System was mixed with three different integral colors to produce a high-profile hardscape surface that feels great under bare feet for the indoor/outdoor pool decks and compliments the natural surroundings for the installed hardscape. Because the dry, loose soil of the Colorado prairie is difficult to grade and doesn’t hold moisture well, the Colorado Hardscape crews took special care to compact and re-compact work areas during site preparation to confidently assure long-lasting work. Crews completed a massive 21,000 hours while working together in three to four different areas around the site at the same time. The biggest challenge of this project was that the vast site and the enormous building required a multitude of trades to be working almost everywhere simultaneously.

Setting it apart from other similarly-sized resorts, Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center was designed to authentically capture a local sense of place. The resort’s interior design and décor is modeled after aspects iconic to Colorado – everything from cascading waterfalls over boulders and local nature artwork to native landscaping and elevators designed to look like old mine shafts. These planned elements carry over into guest rooms, with aspen tree-inspired carpets, lumberjack plaid print pillows and hiking and camping maps in the closets. The Convention Center includes charming Colorado details sprinkled throughout which represent ski tracks, snow drifts and snowflakes. The Bomanite Imprint Systems and Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture were the perfect Bomanite Decorative Concrete aspects to add cohesion with the interior flooring and exterior hardscapes of this native Coloradan built resort.

Colorado Hardscapes dedication to serving clients, constant communication, and relentless commitment to high-quality set the stage for success on this once in a lifetime project. Colorado Hardscapes was awarded the Bomanite Imprint Systems 2018 Silver Award for their impressive natural looking precise installation at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center.

Canobie Lake Park is New England’s Amusement Park known for its FUN! Realizing the need to create more FUN, Canobie Lake Park’s Castaway Island underwent a large expansion. The Tiki resort-like atmosphere now features a wave pool, 60-foot water slides, a Tidal River, a Rain Fortress, a kid friendly lagoon, a Caribbean inspired restaurant with tiki bar and private cabana rentals that include a television, refrigerator and lockers.

Canobie Lake Park, Castaway Island Expansion, plazas, decking, waterways, stamped with multiple Bomacron Patterns to give that real tiki inspired resort feel.

This 100 year old family operated park has been keeping up with the times with renovations and updates throughout the years. Bomanite licensee, Harrington Bomanite has been a part of those additions for more than 30 years.  Harrington Bomanite has installed so many upgrades and enhancements throughout the park and was presented with its greatest challenge of the “Tidal River Project” an addition to the 45,000 square foot Castaway Island expansion. The overall renovation using the Bomanite Imprint Systems included multiple Bomanite stamped concrete patterns and color hardener and release agent colors installed as the decking, plaza, restrooms and water areas.

Canobie Lake Park, Castaway Island Expansion, drainage walkway meandering brook Stamped with Bomacron Garden Stone Pattern Decorative ConcreteThe most challenging aspect was to achieve a drainage system in the 2+ acres site, that satisfied state and local environmental concerns, while at the same time maintaining aesthetics demanded by the owner (and designer) Raymond Captell. Pavers were not part of the drainage solution. After months of brainstorming, Captell came up with an 8’ wide “meandering brook” concept of stamped concrete. The 8’ area was designed with a 4′ wide center area of the Bomacron Garden Stone pattern, then a 12″ wide drain grate on each side, which in turn was bordered with a 12″ Bomanite Textured Border. Below this 8′ wide area would be a 4′ deep engineered system of graded aggregates for drainage.

The challenging part for Harrington Bomanite was not just the pouring and stamping, but the forming. Harrington Bomanite accessed the design perimeters and was able to figure the best way to achieve Captell’s winding waterway concept and bring it to life with a custom aqua blue color hardener to give it the final appearance of water in a real-life brook. In the end, the two serpentine drains, totaling 380 linear feet, were able to infiltrate storm water and minimize runoff, while at the same time adding another aesthetic dimension to the overall deck.

Canobie Lake Park, Castaway Island Expansion, Kids lagoon Stamped with Bomacron Garden Stone Pattern Decorative ConcreteThe custom blue colors were also used in several tones and shades to mimic the ocean in the water reservoir, kids lagoon and bathroom areas. Restroom concrete floors were textured with the Bomacron Sandstone Texture imprint and the bottom of the Tidal river with the Bomacron Light Slate Texture imprint. The beach areas were simulated with the Bomacron Regular Slate Texture and Light brown tones of Color Hardener and Release Agent to get that perfect sandy beach vibe. One final touch in creating that Tiki-resort design is the Bomacron 11.5” Boardwalk pattern running throughout the resort including the Lifeguard walk, thus making it the perfect Island getaway.
