Bomanite Imprint Systems using Bomanite Running Bond Belgian Block with Used Brick Border patterns was installed at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Birmingham, AL, by Bomanite Licensee Jeffco Concrete.

Ironically, Blue Cross Blue Shield in Birmingham, AL, needs to be just as concerned about the health and well-being of their buildings’ aesthetics as they do to the rest of their business model.  Their sidewalks were beyond the point of repair and seriously needed to be replaced.  They contracted the architectural design team at Birchfield, Penuel & Associates, LLC, to create their vision of durable, easily maintained, yet strikingly beautiful sidewalks.  The bid was awarded to Murray Construction as the main contractor.  Bomanite Licensee, Jeffco Concrete, was chosen to install the decorative concrete sidewalks because of their sterling reputation in the area and their expertise in artisanship and installation.

Primate Canopy Trails is a 35,000-square-foot outdoor expansion to the Primate House at the St. Louis Zoo in St. Louis, MO. The $13 million exhibit consists of new outdoor homes for primates and includes climbing structures that allow guests to explore the forest canopy next to the animals.  This new exhibit is like a jungle gym for all primates, both zoo animals and human visitors.  Creating a first-of-its-kind zoo experience, it is an outdoor playground that brings a sense of joy and freedom to all who venture there.

Decorative Concrete Conveys Story

Overhead mesh tunnels connected to the Primate House lead to tall, preexisting live trees and other outdoor habitats with spaces for the animals to climb and perch.  Four tunnels lead to the Primate House, and four lead to the Primate Care Center.  There is even a see-through tunnel that guests can walk through to get a panoramic view of the animals.  Inside the care center, windows provide the primates with a view to the outside, which they didn’t have at the original Primate House.  Two custom-built boxes in each habitat provide shelter from the rain or just a place to spend some alone time. In the winter, the caretakers can add a heating pad to transform the boxes into a warm zone. Each habitat also has custom shade sails and a cool mist fan for warm or hot days.  While down below the paving placed by Musselman & Hall allows guests to wander beneath the trees surrounded by jungle.  Bomanite Imprint Systems custom decorative concrete has the ability to tell a story as well as to enchant the eyes and stimulate the senses.

Sam Kroesen of Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors worked with the designers from PGAV Destinations to develop a hardscape that would not only impress guests but would also mimic the natural habitat of the animals. Musselman & Hall craftsmen placed integrally colored concrete with “Dried Mud” textures and then imprinted the surface with actual jungle leaves and anatomically correct footprints for several monkey species to accurately represent the gait pattern of each species.

All of the Musselman & Hall work was capped with the jewel of the project, a 17-foot diameter medallion that used stenciling and three colors of Bomanite Color Hardener before being imprinted with an “Embedded Stone” texture to create a large-scale graphic that would hold up to the heavy foot traffic.  Bomanite Imprint Systems are cast-in-place concrete flooring and paving that adds a distinctive architectural touch to any project, together with the durability to stand up to the toughest traffic loads and environmental conditions.

Having successfully worked with Touchstone Hospitality in the past, Carolina Bomanite Corporation was the developer’s top choice to create the decorative concrete hardscape surfaces.  The Carolina Bomanite team stepped up to the challenge to remedy another contractor’s poor workmanship on a previous project and brought the Bomanite family of products and expertise to the rescue.  Since then, the owner refuses to allow any other architectural concrete trade on its building sites.

Unsurpassed Selection and Superiority

Carolina Bomanite installed Bomanite Imprint Systems to create the porte cochere, entrance, and amenity areas at the Courtyard by Marriott in Mauldin, South Carolina, providing a decorative concrete hardscape with stunning results.

The Mauldin Courtyard by Marriott highlights Bomanite Imprint Systems with multiple Bomacron patterns.  The selection and quality of Bomanite Imprinting Tools is unsurpassed in the industry with well over 400 distinct patterns and associated textures.  The hotel’s porte cochere features Bomanite Bomacron Running Bond Belgian Block, which resembles hand cut and tumbled basalt cobblestones, and adds distinct texture and design detail to the hardscape.  The Bomanite Bomacron 10” Boardwalk pattern was installed to create the front entrance as well as an extension at the back of the hotel leading into the enclosed amenity area, giving the lifelike look of real wood while providing the durability of concrete.  Additionally, the Bomanite Bomacron Slate Texture pattern was utilized to create the smoking area adjacent to the front entrance and in the enclosed amenity area at the back of the hotel.  The Slate Texture installation in the amenity area features a 3-4’ sawcut pattern that runs bias to the building, adding versatile texture and rustic, random veining that complements the hotel’s architecture and aesthetic.

To further accentuate the design, darkened float finish bands were incorporated around the salt textured fire table with the incorporation of a channel drain that will handle runoff water from the covered patio seating area.  Form and function come together seamlessly with this design and no details were spared, providing a beautifully stunning hardscape that is durable, distinct, and functional.

Challenges Faced

Carolina Bomanite installed Bomanite Imprint Systems to create the porte cochere, entrance, and amenity areas at the Courtyard by Marriott in Mauldin, South Carolina, providing a decorative concrete hardscape with stunning results.

This project was underway prior to the onset of the pandemic and was thus temporarily delayed as the owner, along with others in the hospitality industry understood the future of travel.  Facing challenges like material shortages and labor inefficiencies in unprecedented scope and duration forced a delay during construction for approximately one year.  Despite the challenges that were faced, Carolina Bomanite was able to exceed the owner’s expectations with their successful completion of the architectural concrete installation.

The Medium Ashlar Slate and Soldier Course Belgian Block patterns are a stunning sidewalk installation of Bomanite Imprint Systems by Connecticut Bomanite Systems in Downtown Danbury, CT.

Danbury, CT, has embraced the vision of TOD, Transit-Oriented Development, to help revitalize downtown Danbury.  At the key of their TOD vision is a plan for higher density compact urban development that features walkable, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes and sidewalks, within a 10-minute walk of the train station and, connecting various modes of transit, jobs, housing, services, and amenities.  The streetscapes and sidewalks play a major role in attracting investment, new businesses, and employees to Downtown Danbury.  Whether an area is walkable depends on the physical condition of the space accessible to pedestrians as well as the perception of the physical space and its attractiveness to those who do and could utilize it.  The previous existing streetscape improvements were constructed in 1993 and in need of replacement, as evidenced by this Google Street View picture below from 2018.  The city selected Colonna Concrete & Asphalt Paving, LLC as the main contractor, and Connecticut Bomanite Systems was chosen to install the decorative concrete sidewalks for the roughly $12 million project.

Carolina Bomanite enhanced the grand entrance at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Charlotte, North Carolina by installing Bomanite Imprint Systems featuring the Running Bond Belgian Block pattern.

The expansion to the existing sidewalk entrance tasked with matching six-year-old existing imprinted concrete in multiple locations was a challenging factor with this installation.  Bomanite French Gray Color Hardener and Bomanite Cobblestone Gray Release Agent were used, and Carolina Bomanite exceeded coloration expectations, doing an extraordinary job of tying in the existing concrete with the newly poured and colored sections.  Carolina Bomanite’s 25-year history of working with General Contractor Brown & Brown Construction helped to make this project a collaborative success and although the original design was scribbled on a piece of paper, Carolina Bomanite worked to design and install a grand entrance that is reminiscent of a German biergarten and enhances the old-world charm and European style throughout the brewery.

Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems at modern roundabout in Branford, CT.

Three towns in Connecticut, Branford, Guilford, and North Branford, experienced major safety issues with a T-shaped design of an intersection of two major highways that straddle the town lines of all three municipalities.  An older Google Map satellite view of the intersection shows the original design but can’t adequately explain the problem.  The arms of the T intersection shown is U.S. 1 which routinely saw speeds of 40-60mph.  The leg of the T intersection is Route 22 which was required to merge onto U.S. 1 from a complete stop at a stop sign.  Naturally there was a predominance of “right-angle crashes”, more commonly known as “T-Bone Collisions”.  When a vehicle traveling 40-60mph T-Bones a vehicle coming from a dead stop, the results are usually devastating.    A secondary issue was peak hour congestion on Route 22 and lengthy times for vehicles to turn.  According to DOT data, 11,600 vehicles a day travel through the routes 1 and 22 intersection.

Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems at modern roundabout in Branford, CT.

The logical solution to all those problems was a modern 3-legged roundabout to replace the existing T intersection.  For the multi-million-dollar project, CT DOT selected Empire Paving, Inc. as the main contractor and Connecticut Bomanite Systems was chosen to install the islands and the sidewalks.  By installing a modern roundabout, CT DOT realized the purpose of the project which was to improve safety and alleviate peak hour congestion on Route 22.  Increased safety performance was achieved due to the operational characteristics of a roundabout, eliminating the occurrence of right-angle crashes and reducing speeds.  The approach roadways were modified to introduce curvature for the deflection of vehicles to reduce their speed as they approach the roundabout.  Raised splitter islands and a raised center island with a truck apron was installed to channelize traffic and direct vehicles through the new configuration.  Pedestrian improvements, including sidewalks, crosswalks, and splitter island refuge areas were also installed.

Decorative Concrete Helps Solve Safety Issues

Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems at modern roundabout in Branford, CT.

For this project, Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems using both the Bomacron Ashlar Slate pattern and the Bomacron Herringbone Used Brick pattern for a total of 9,786 square feet of decorative concrete.  To achieve the desired color for the rotary portion of the roundabout, where the Ashlar Slate pattern was installed, Bomanite sand color hardener was used.  Bomanite red brick color hardener was used for the islands and the edging of the sidewalks where the Herringbone Used Brick pattern was installed.  The choice of colors and patterns creates an aesthetically pleasing decorative concrete and uses just enough eye-catching brightly colored detail to aid in the overall architectural design flow of the roundabout.

Bomanite is unsurpassed in the industry for its selection and quality of imprinting tools.  With well over 400 distinct patterns and associated textures Bomanite has a commanding selection of imprinting tools to select from. Bomanite molds are developed from natural products such as stone or wood as well as unconventional surfaces such as metal or plastic or whatever your imagination may bring to the table. Images, logos, borders and highly custom textures are all part of the Bomanite offering.

Architectural Concrete and Design installs Bomanite Toppings System to renovate Valley Fair Mall’s interior concourse, replacing outdated tile with a stunning stamped overlay.

Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah offers over 830,000 square feet of shopping, dining, and entertainment with over 120 retail stores and delicious dining options to explore.  In 2012, Bomanite Licensee Architectural Concrete & Design Inc. undertook a 70,000 square foot concrete makeover within Valley Fair Mall, retrofitting the concourse with a stampable topping system.  This system was to be installed over the existing ceramic tile to save time, money, and eliminate the mess of ripping up the tile.

Family owned and one of the first Bomanite Licensees in the nation, Architectural Concrete & Design has installed a wide variety of hardscapes for commercial, residential, and municipal projects.  This interior mall project was a new venture for Devin Johnson, the company’s Vice President, who collaborated with Bomanite’s Technical Services Division to develop the application procedures that would ensure that this Bomanite Toppings System could be placed directly over the existing tile.

Bomanite Systems

Bomanite Thin-Set is a specially formulated polymer-modified topping mix that can be imprinted and will bond to any stable, structurally sound substrate.  It is typically installed at 3/8-inch thick and can be feathered to almost a zero edge.  Bomanite Thin-Set is as an extremely effective alternative to demolishing an existing substrate and can be exposed to traffic quickly, which was a priority for this job as the work performed on the expansive 70,000 plus square-foot concourse could not be completed during normal working hours or block daily access to any store in the mall.

The process selected used aggressive surface preparation followed by a 100% solids epoxy primer broadcasted to rejection with silica sand to create a mechanical bond for the overlay.  After this process, the crew would on the next night apply a scratch coat of Thin-Set II followed by a screeded 3/8-inch thick layer of Thin-Set II, that was then imprinted with one of four Bomanite imprint patterns used throughout the mall.

After this part of the process was complete each morning, the crew would lay down a section of breathable landscape fabric over the affected entrances and rope off everything they had stamped.  The timing had to be precise so that the stamped area had time to dry and could withstand foot traffic.  After large sections of flooring were textured, secondary coloring and sealing were undertaken prior to turning over the fully finished floors to the mall.

Design Upgrade

Featured throughout the concourse is Bomanite Basketweave Used Brick that was integrally colored with Bomanite Brick Red as well as Bomacron Random Slate in Shale Gray.  To create visual breaks, an 8-inch English Slate Texture border in Sand was created with some areas featuring straight lines while other areas feature a free-flowing design.  To create even more variety, the Bomanite 12-inch Boardwalk pattern with Sonora Tan Color Hardener was used to enhance the mall’s roundabout and accent other selected areas.

Then and Now

The Valley Fair Mall makeover was perfectly suited to use an overlay, allowing the mall owners to avoid a messy and more costly demolition route.  Architectural Concrete & Design expertly installed Bomanite Thin-Set II in combination with Bomanite Imprint Systems to renovate and recreate the mall’s design aesthetic.  The “proof is in the pudding” when we say Bomanite Architectural Concrete Systems are top notch; Bomanite Licensed Installers provide the expertise and proficiency to create long-lasting, durable, and beautifully decorative flooring options.

Architectural Concrete and Design installs Bomanite Toppings System to renovate Valley Fair Mall’s interior concourse, replacing outdated tile with a stunning stamped overlay.

A decade has passed since Architectural Concrete & Design successfully installed the Bomanite Toppings System and imprint patterns.  While their decorative concrete prowess provided a stunning decorative concrete layout that impressed patrons and exceeded the mall owner’s expectations, the long-lasting results still stand out as a feature piece inside the mall.  Not only did Architectural Concrete & Design produce a product with durability and longevity, but they added distinct decorative detail that showcases quality of work and superior design that has and will continue to stand the test of time.

Perpetual maintenance of an existing asphalt driveway finally became too much for this homeowner.  The asphalt detracted from the curb appeal of the residence.  The driveway looked old and outdated.  The freezing and snowy Concord, NH, winters meant that maintenance had become a headache and the driveway was not durable.  The homeowner reached out to Bomanite Licensee Premier Concrete Construction LLC for recommendations and guidance.  Premier Concrete Construction recommended Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems using Bomanite Sandscape® Texture, and Bomanite Imprint Systems using Concrete Graphics with a Celtic Braid border and decorative sawcuts.  The homeowner also wanted some “sparkle” in the mix of aggregates, so mirror was used to create that effect.  Premier Concrete Construction worked closely with the homeowner and aided them with their color selection.
